Those friends are the siblings Mai and Quang-ha (who is also seeing Dell for his disruptive behaviour) who end up convincing their mother Pattie to take care of Willow temporarily. She is all alone in the world apart from Dell, a school counsellor whose therapy methods are completely unprofessional and from a couple of new friends she has met recently. But it also made me ponder and question its main message.Ĭounting by 7s’ main character is Willow Chance, a little girl who has lost two sets of parents in her short life – she never knew her blood parents and her adoptive ones die in a terrible accident. It is a touching story that made me laugh and that made me cry. It is also a beautiful story about different kinds of families, about deep connections that can be formed between people from different walks of life and above all, it is about surviving adversity. On the surface, this is an innocuous book, full of good intentions: it is a book featuring different stories about diverse PoC characters (including its protagonist). It is difficult to pinpoint the exact moment when I fell out of love with Counting by 7s but it happened slowly yet inexorably in the hours after I finished reading it. Original review posted on The Book Smugglers So she ditches her horn, scrubs off her sparkles, and returns home, where her best friend is waiting for her with a hug.” After a while, Thelma realizes that she was happier as her ordinary, sparkle-free self. She rises to instant international stardom, but at an unexpected cost. Then in a rare pink and glitter-filled moment of fate, Thelma’s wish comes true. “Thelma dreams of being a glamorous unicorn. Per GoodReads, here’s the official synopsis for the book: “I’m beyond excited that my beautiful phoney Unicorn is going to sparkle her way onto the screen in a big, glittery Netflix film. On the announcement of the movie, Blabey said: Blabey is also known for his book series The Bad Guys (recently adapted by DreamWorks and streaming on Netflix in select regions) and Pig the Pug. The movie is an adaptation of the best-selling Thelma the Unicorn novel by Australian author Aaron Blabey which was first published in 2015 and saw a follow-up, The Return of Thelma the Unicorn, released in 2019. Young Johnny Marr and his darling Dorothy are deeply in love and intending to spend the rest of their days together then tragedy strikes Dorothy down in the opening chapter and Johnny is transformed in his loss into the unstoppable agent of vengeance upon those responsible for her death. ‘All At Once, No Alice’ (1937) shares a sizeable chunk of DNA with the novel Phantom Lady (1942), and today’s read Rendezvous in Black (1948) harks back to Woolrich’s criminous debut, The Bride Wore Black (1940). This was evidently not so much of a concern for Cornell Woolrich, who could so readily imagine so many nightmarish possibilities bristling from any setup that he often had to use the same core idea more than once just to explore the principles that struck him. One of the things that struck me as I got into the works of Freeman Wills Crofts is how, from book to book, he always finds a way to subtly alter the nature of the plot he is writing so that he never covers the exact same ground twice.
They were a pair of blacks, yes, but of far superior quality to Daniel’s, and a groom-another stranger-perched on the back of the curricle. I mistook your horses for those of my brother’s but I see, upon closer examination, they are not his.’ She bit her lip as sick disappointment flooded her, followed by the fear that had dogged her ever since her brother had failed to come home. ‘Oh!’ Those doubts had caught up with her and knocked her flat. Her jaw snapped shut and her cheeks scorched. ‘Who are you? Where is Daniel?’ She raked the driver with her eyes and then switched her gaze to the horses. Her eyes met those of the driver-a stranger-and she skidded to a halt, gravel spinning from beneath her feet. She shut her mind against the evidence of her eyes as she reached the foot of the steps and hurried to the curricle. She could not bear to let that prayer of hope fizzle and die. Across the hall and through the front door she sped.ĭoubts nipped at her as she sprinted down the steps to the now stationary conveyance, but she ignored them. A glimpse of a curricle drawn by a pair of blacks set her heart racing, and she flung her embroidery aside, gathered her skirts and ran for the door. She leapt to her feet and hurried to the salon window. Hope erupted through her.it had been five days since her brother had gone out one day and not returned. Thea’s head snapped up at the sound of wheels crunching across the gravel outside Stourwell Court. I think that Rachel Vincent does a very good job of developing the characters with each book. Hopefully, Rachel Vincent does not intend on ending the series any time soon as I could easily pick up the next book and start listening right now. I get more and more invested in these characters with every book. Not to mention that Kaylee's world gets shattered when things hit way too close to home and she's forced to make decisions no person should have to face. Now, they're in a race to find the culprit before someone else dies. In this installment of the Soul Screamers series by Rachel Vincent, Kaylee and her boyfriend, Nash, discover that someone is selling demon's breath to their fellow high school students as the newest and coolest drug. The other girl, Miss McKillop, is of a more durable constitution though of lean frame and not so good a complexion. The matron doesn’t seem shocked by this and gives him some recommendations as if they were products, even if she can say that it is for the girs’ own good: “a marriage to a likely man would probably be preferred to a lifetime of such work.” Here’s what Simon Herron learns of Annie: She is responding to an inquiry from a Simon Herron, a young man making his way in the rugged frontier, who apparently wants a wife and thought of the orphanage as a kind of shop. Our first glimpse of Annie is in a letter written by a woman who runs a girl’s orphanage in Toronto (the entire story is told through letters or other primary documents). This woman is Annie Herron, née McKillop. Still, by that time we recognize this rich, sympathetic character, even if her own accounts are contradictory. Here Alice Munro goes out into the wilderness of Canada in 1852 and shows us the survival of a woman who, at first, sits on the periphery of other narratives, unable to speak for herself until the end of the story. This is one of my favorite Alice Munro stories.
